Thursday Morning Warmup: An end, but not closure

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

It was announced yesterday that Tony Stewart will not face charges in the death of Kevin Ward Jr. at Canandaigua Speedway back in August. A grand jury made the determination, so unless further evidence comes forward, the criminal proceedings have come to a close. The Ward family will be pursuing a civil case, as most have expected, but that may take several more years to shake out.

As a Tony Stewart fan, it did feel good yesterday to know that the criminal justice system did it's job, explored all options, investigated properly, and came to the conclusion that it was not a criminal act. I haven't been a Stewart "fan" since the accident, I didn't feel like it was appropriate to be openly cheering a guy who might have committed that act. But the ignorant bashing and slandering that proliferated in the intervening months was difficult to take, and by the reactions to the ruling it appears its going to continue. It is a minor penalty compared to the pain the Ward family is feeling, but it still feels unfair to me.

How is your Thursday?
