Your Playoff Beard and You

A guide to understanding the responsibility of having, maintaining, and benefitting from your playoff beard.

I intend for this guide to be a simple and informative collection of relevant beard knowledge and wisdom. People that are unable to grow a playoff beard are still welcome to read this guide (except for Crosby, I hate that guy). But everyone else, teens, ladies, Tyler Seguin (it's not his fault, but it's true) are all invited to glean some beard knowledge and get a peak inside the Bearded Brethren (the holy order of the beard). There is a lot of work involved in having a playoff beard, there is more to it than simply hiding your razor and hoping your girlfriend doesn't notice.

It is well known and well documented that the most important thing a fan can do during the playoffs is grow a playoff beard. The growth of a wild beard draws power from old prophets and ancient gods (all of whom are well documented as being members of the Bearded Brethren). This power is then conferred to the team to assist them in dominating their foes. It is similar to the effect achieved by ritualistic sacrifices. Again, well documented, what follows is not my opinion, it's science.

Take care of your beard and your beard will take care of you . . .

Playoff Beard Question

So last year I didn't grow a playoff beard because I was searching for a summer job, and we all know what happened. This year, I should be fine growing a playoff beard as far as work is concerned. However, if I grow a beard and the Bruins lose, I'll think I jinxed them by not going beard-less like last season. Please help with words of encouragement ("It's ok, what you do has no impact on how the team plays) or discouragement (if you grow a beard and they lose I'll hunt you down). I really want to grow one but I want some assurance.

NEVERMIND: No Game Watch Viewing Party!

Okay y'all, we're going back to the Fours to watch Thursday's 7:30pm game against Ottawa. I posted about this on Friday I think but didn't make a real post for it. If everyone who went to NYC isn't sick of it by now, Anyhow, here's the info:

  • What: Away game viewing party
  • Where: The Fours Boston, Canal St.
  • When: 7:30 pm, Thursday, April 5th
  • Who: Fellow Chowdaheads and Bruins fans
  • Why: because we can, mostly.

If you're planning on attending, please reply to the poll below so we can tell The Fours how many people we'll actually have:

Weekend Open Thread: Chowdah Invades New York

Begin-032110-post-full_medium

Here's an open thread for everyone to post what they are doing and where they all may be to meet and drink endless amounts of beer. I am going to keep it short and sweet here. Islanders at 1:00 on Saturday and Rangers at 7:00 on Sunday, where you going, what you drinking, where you going after? This thread is also for everyone at home to interact with us hooligans running rampart in New York.

Comment of the night (3/27/2012)

I've posted in game threads about doing a comment of the night, and one was posted though now I can't find it. I still think the blog should do it, so I'll start it off.

I missed tonight's game, but I scanned through the comments and this one stuck out...

Bruins Sign CCHA Player of the Year Torey Krug

In what continues to be a busy week on the player development side, the invaluable Kirk Luedeke of the New England Hockey Journal is reporting that the Bruins have signed NCAA UFA D Torey Krug of Michigan State. Krug, a junior out of Livonia, MI, scored 23 goals the past two seasons, and finishes his collegiate career with 83 points. The 5'9" 175lb defenseman was the Spartans captain as well as a two time CCHA first team All-Star. This season he tied TJ Tynan for the CCHA scoring title, the first defenseman to do so since 1986-87. Because the Spartans were eliminated from the NCAA tournament this weekend, Krug will report to Providence for the remainder of the 2011-2012 season.

That move follows the Bruins officially announcing the signings of two other Michigan NCAA based players, 2010 5th round draft pick Justin Florek, F, of Northern Michigan was signed (and already had a 4 point game in Providence Friday night) as well as 2010 7th round draft pick Zach Trotman, D, of Lake Superior State was signed (and scored in HIS first game with Providence last night).

Headed to my first Bruins game tonight!

Live in the LA area and am going to the game tonight - I've yet to see the Bruins play in person and can't wait! Nothing would make me happier than to see the B's pounce on the Kings and give me something else to rub in with my friends. That said, two things:

1. Anyone else a west coaster headed to the game?

2. Anything I need to know about rooting for the Bruins in person & in a hostile environment?

Friday open thread is going rogue

I am impatient this morning and whatever so it's fanpost time. It's friday and the Bruins are out vacationing in California.

NCAA TOURNEY STARTS TODAY!

BC is probably going to run rampant and dominate but you never know. Games today:

  • Michigan State vs. 3-Union 3pm, ESPNU
  • Denver vs. Ferris St. 5:30pm, ESPN3 (yeah the online one)
  • Umass-Lowell vs. Miami (Ohio) 6:30pm, ESPNU
  • Cornell vs. 2-Michigan 9pm, ESPNU

Should be some good games. You can watch them all on ESPN3 as well, so if you've got comcast internet and an xbox get to it. Today I will be sneaking sips from the flask under my desk and pretending to be productive but fooling no one.

Highlight of last night:

Radulov scored a goal! But the Pens are still dominant.
What's on tap, y'all?

Vintage Hockey Jersey Scam

Hey Kids! I just wanted to pass on some info so others do not get scammed. I tried to order a Vintage Hockey Jersey from Vintage Hockey Classics in New York. Once I paid the guy, he would not return my calls, texts, or e-mails until I got the police involved. Got a few minutes? Check it out

Pens nominate Cooke for Masterton

I guess now you're entitled to a trophy for overcoming "being a dickhead"? Previous winners of the Masterton include Bryan Berard, who returned to the game after being blinded in one eye by Marian Hossa, Mario Lemieux, who we all know beat cancer and continued his career, and Jose Theodore, who excelled in 2009-10 despite dealing with the death of his infant son Chace. Then you have Cooke, whose only adversity to overcome was his own obnoxious play. It's a mockery of everything the Masterton trophy stands for and an embarrassment to the legacy of the Penguins. Truly amazing.

Edited: I don't know where I came up with the Bryan Berard car crash thing. It was a high stick from Hossa.
