We’re about to that point where we need to start thinking about post-season hockey, and we gotta see how the competition is doing.

The Bruins may have been struggling recently, but their playoff position has realistically only one challenger this year thanks to a stout goaltending pair and some truly exceptional work by some of the team’s main forwards.

Yes, we’re finally to that point in the year where we start thinking of who the dance partner of the Bruins will be once the postseason begins.

Which of course means, we gotta talk about the Leafs.

The most likely scenario...unfortunately: Toronto.

I am physically ill at the idea of the Bruins having to play this godforsaken suck-ass loser franchise again. I would rather skin my arm than have to subject myself to a fanbase and media environment that seems absolutely flabbergasted that hockey seems to involve their active participation and not just it happening around them.

And it’s absolutely more than likely that Boston’s going to face them in the first round.

Again.

Great playoff format, Gary!

Either way, the Bruins are extremely likely to face the Maple Leafs thanks to Florida unfortunately being on some other level of team this year. Saturday’s win against Philly helped a lot after they got some much needed help from Tampa, but it’s only a point’s difference. Boston has to face Ottawa, The Rangers, and Philly (again) this week, while Florida has Nashville, The Blueshirts...and Philly. All three of those teams are theoretically winnable given the way both teams play.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I suppose.

But if the Bruins still have their scoring problems and their goaltending still chooses to take nights off; Get ready for brand new narratives of this team to be built against our will as both sides inevitably find themselves going seven extremely stupid games because no matter how good or bad either team is, that is how it happens. I think in my head that even as flawed as Boston is, they should be able to knock off a team that’s made a concerted effort towards being worse since the new guy took charge, but they will go to seven whether or not anyone wants it to! It sucks!

But if they can stay on top? Well, then the fun really begins!

The WAAAAAY more fun Wildcard scenarios!

Now that we’ve paid our dues to the fetid problems of Blue and White,

Boston at the top of the Atlantic (assuming they get there) would get the 2nd Wildcard team as their opponent, and that is a hotly contested spot in the standings as of right now. Let’s take a gander at how the rest of the East is taking up the final spot in the dance.

The Front-runners - Detroit, Washington, and New York Islanders

As of right now, the Red Wings hold the spot, but only just; the Isle have been damn effective at creating offense under Patrick Roy and the Caps have managed a couple of crucial tight defensive games over Pacific Northwest opponents, with both taking ample advantage of the Red Wings going on a six game losing bender. That said, there’s been a little course correction as of Saturday night; Detroit got a massive two points in dropping Buffalo 4-1, and NYI getting their hearts broken by the Sens in OT. Does that fix the issue? Not entirely!

If you think Detroit might be the more preferable matchup, then the schedule over the next couple of weeks might actually work to your favor; New York’s upcoming week started by getting pantsed by the Rangers, and continues on to feature Carolina, Winnipeg, and Detroit...and also the Devils; a team on the outside threatening to look in...eventually. Even if NJ is an easier out, that’s still a brutal stretch of games in comparison to Detroit’s much easier time of Columbus, Pittsburgh, Nashville, and NYI. Washington meanwhile really has it’s work cut out for them; they get Carolina, Toronto, and Winnipeg, with their only reasonable matchup being the Flames tonight.

That game on this upcoming Thursday is going to be a major turning point for these three teams. Probably should be on National TV! Isn’t going to be!

Gary you should fix this!

The Longshots - Buffalo and New Jersey

Instead of October Sabres, it seems the new look Sabres have “Spring Sabres”, where they threaten to be a playoff contender for two months and then never make it. It’s an improvement I guess, but I don’t know if it’s the kind you build off of. Meanwhile, the Devils can’t stop a beach ball and for whatever reason have had the worst time trying to get their all-world talents to play like it. Firing Lindy definitely helped a little...but not much.

A really weird pairing indeed. I thought for sure these two teams would be pretty comfortably in it at the beginning of the season.

Either way, the Sabres need to get their act together and fast if they wanna compete with this bunchup in the frontrunning category: They’ve got the 6th most difficult schedule coming up according to Tankathon, and I’m inclined to agree. They go out west this week to play Vancouver and Seattle, then settle in with Edmonton and Calgary to finish it off. The only real layup right now should be Seattle if they play their cards right. New Jersey meanwhile got beat yesterday by Vegas, and gets Pittsburgh, Ottawa, NYI, and Winnipeg upcoming.

Only if they start slipping - Tampa Bay

The Lightning looked for all the world like they were on the outs from the playoffs...and then decided they would only lose one game in March so far, and absolutely pummel the teams they beat. That catapulted them ahead of the Red Wings and comfortably 4 points ahead of Detroit and into the 1st Wildcard spot. So long as they keep pace, Boston will completely avoid the Bolts entirely for the first round and leave that to NYR as problem.

That being said...they do have to beat the teams they should in order to keep pace. Detroit has a easier schedule, and they’re at home for most of it. Tampa meanwhile is having their west coast trip; taking on the Knights, the Kings, the Sharks, and the Ducks. There are two wins on here that you could comfortably pencil in! The Red Wings on the other hand, if they keep up the momentum, could clean house with their upcoming week.

For your sake Tampa, you’d better come out swinging against Vegas! They’re doing that thing where they rope-a-dope teams and then win 3-1!

Thanks for playing - Pittsburgh

Perhaps...Glasses Man Bad, after all?

Frankly I don’t know what John Henry expected here. Kyle Dubas tried to get this rusting ‘76 GTO to heave forward, and while it’s engine is good...there’s still far too much wrong with the team as it’s currently constructed to make it. Erik Karlsson didn’t move the needle, their forward group seems completely incapable of generating meaningful offense that can keep the flaws of their goaltending and defense good and hidden.

Worst part is that Dubas may have to convince someone else to execute his vision while also trying to convince the Fenway Sports Group to blow it up. Maybe he can tell them it’ll save money in the long term.

In a game they couldn’t lose, they didn’t even if they only took one point extra over Ottawa.

Another close call, this time it went the way of Boston. In front of a record setting American crowd with Boston technically being the home team, Boston scored first but couldn’t hold on to a regulation victory. Instead both teams had opportunities in the overtime but were left off the books forcing a shootout.

Game Notes

The extra point puts Boston back ahead of Ottawa into 4th place, the last playoff spot.

Both teams forced the goalies to make 25 saves but Boston’s defense was once again out of sorts. The team is heavily relying on Frankel right now , which Knight mentioned in her post game interview.

Knight had the lone goal for Boston and one of the shootout tallies. She is seeming to have more good games of late, which this team is in desperate need of.

Knight said it best in her post game interview, Frankel has kept this team win a lot of games, especially a few they didn’t deserve to be in, today was no different. Once again Frankel stood on her head and held the opponents to only one goal and was a a wall in the shootout.

Boston travels to red hot Toronto on Wednesday knight.

A seven-goal period had all types of momentum swings.

The Boston Bruins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers after a wild third period which saw the team leading by three and holding onto a one-goal lead by the grit of their teeth twice.

“We have to learn you have to close out games,” Jim Montgomery said. “You can’t think it’s over. The other teams are desperate.

Charlie Coyle netted two goals in the win while Jake DeBrusk and Brad Marchand each ended the night as well with two points. Jeremy Swayman made 24 saves in the win.

But there was a lot of momentum and emotional swings during the game — predominantly in the third.

The game was tied after the first and second before the Bruins elevated their game to start the third, scoring three goals in three minutes by the 4:04 mark of the period.

But as has been the case most season, the B’s had a hard time closing out the game and the Flyers began to close the gap, beating the Bruins below the goal line and out front.

“We have to be a little better and more mature as a team to close out those games,” Montgomery said.

Nevertheless, two points secured and the Bruins move into first in the Eastern Conference, and first in the league.

Here are the highlights and there are a lot of them!

Game notes:

While the game was closer than they would have wanted it as a three-goal lead began to slip away, what was encouraging was depth of scoring playing a factor in the win. Beecher continues to have a great call-up. DeBrusk is also getting hot right now and finding the back of the net.

What is still worrisome is obviously the Bruins’ ability to close out a game and shut down their opponents in the final minute.

Montgomery said postgame he felt the Flyers were beating the Bruins around the net and it was something he tried to fix earlier in the game. “After the first goal, we addressed it, but it didn’t get better,” Montgomery said.

The B’s will be facing more teams vying for a playoff spot during this stretch, who will play desperate hockey. Tonight, they faced a desperate Flyers team. Coyle and DeBrusk said postgame the team can learn from this.

With his two goals, Coyle has now hit a career high with 23 goals this season. His highest before this season was 21 goals back in 2015-16. He’s also two points away from tying his most points in a season.

The Bruins are back at TD Garden on Tuesday, March 19, when they host the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m.

In a must win game Boston heads to neutral turf as the PWHL takes over Detroit.

Neutral ice might be just what a free falling Boston team needs. No pressures of home, no disadvantage of the road. In a must win game if Boston isn’t tanking early for the draft picks we shall see if they can turn the season around.

This is the first of two takeover games games for the league as Toronto and Montreal head to Pittsburgh tomorrow.

Boston is technically the home game in this, losing a game at Tsongas, though with the quality of their play there this year, that is a blessing.

Questions are growing on the decisions being made at the top for Boston. Today is a must win and Kessel has little room for error.

Ottawa and Boston have met three times, once in Ottawa and twice in Lowell. All three games have ended in regulation with each team winning a game on the road, Boston took the rubber match in Lowell.

Frankel should get the go tonight but you wonder if Kessel is on a short trigger because she feels her seat heating up.

Boston is tied with Ottawa for the last playoff spot. They are three points up on New York for the last spot, all three are equal on 16 games.

The Boston Bruins will face the Philadelphia Flyers for the second time this season tonight. They’ll wrap things up on March 23. In their previous game on Jan. 27, the Bruins won 6-2.

The Bruins return after their OT win on Thursday up in Montreal when Jake DeBrusk netted the game-winner for a 2-1 victory. Danton Heinen also scored in the win.

The Flyers on the other hand lost 6-2 to Toronto on Thursday. Ersson had a rough go at it, allowing three goals in Thursday’s loss in the first period before he got pulled. The Flyers were trailing 6-1 midway through the third.

Philly is 2-2-1 in their last five games. Konecny leads the Flyers with the most points during that stretch — three points.

If playoffs started tomorrow though, the Flyers would be the third seed in the Metropolitan Division.

Marchand is still looking for No. 400. Maybe tonight is the night!

For the Bruins, Pavel Zacha is on a six-game point streak with five goals and four assists. David Pastrnak is on a four-game point streak with three goals and two assists.

The Bruins will honor James van Riemsdyk during a pregame ceremony for 1,000th NHL games. It’s fitting it’s against the Flyers, and likely coordinated that way, as he spent most of his career with Philadelphia.

Hopefully a night like this for JVR will fuel some production for him. In his last 12 games, he only has one assist. JVR didn’t play on Thursday as he was sick. As yesterday was a travel day, there are no updates on his status — or Matt Grzelcyk’s.

We’ll also likely get to see more of Andrew Peeke against the Flyers. He made his Bruins’ debut on Thursday, clocking 17:01 time on ice.

It was a quick one!

It was another overtime game, but at least this one was quick!

Jake DeBrusk and Brad Marchand perfectly executed a 2-on-1 that led to DeBrusk’s winner just 25 seconds into overtime, sending the Bruins home happy with a 2-1 win at the Bell Centre.

Danton Heinen got the scoring started when he put in the hockey version of a fadeaway jumper from the top of the crease to make it 1-0 Bruins early in the first.

Game notes

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised it came to this, as the Bruins lead the league in OT/shootout games and the Canadiens are in the top five.

This game was a bit of a slog at times, particularly in the thrilling second period, which featured 11 shots combined. That included three power play opportunities (two for Montreal, one for the Bruins). Not exactly an offensive explosion.

Lindholm made a couple of great plays prior to the game-winning goal. First, he stopped Matheson’s progress and prevented him from cycling/retaining possession. Next, he stuck with the play and managed to push a loose puck forward before Cole Caufield could interfere. Those two plays led directly to the game-winner from...

Jake DeBrusk! That was about as good as a 2-on-1 gets, with a perfect pass from Marchand perfectly controlled by DeBrusk. DeBrusk also deserves credit for his work without the puck prior to the winner, both in terms of keeping Matheson outside and then assisting Lindholm in the corner.

Per Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Sports Hub, Heinen became the fifth Bruin since 2005 to score four goals against Montreal during the same season. Pastrnak with a casual eight season series goals in 2019-2020 is something else.

Heinen’s goal was a tap-in (albeit a slightly more difficult one), but he earned it by getting himself to the right part of the ice and parking there. He continues to make smart plays in all three zones and continues to be amongst the league’s best bargain signings.

Andrew Peeke was fine in his Bruins debut, skating 17:01. He generally looked decent.

Charlie McAvoy was a workhorse again tonight, skating 23:23. That’s over three minutes more TOI than Lindholm, who was second on the team.

Speaking of workhorses, Matheson skated a whopping 28:28 in regulation.

While he wasn't exactly under siege all night, Linus Ullmark had a good game in net, making 18 saves. He made one or two big ones in the final minute or so of regulation, when Montreal was applying pressure.

That’s it for the season series! The Bruins go 3-0-1 against Montreal on the year, with both games in Quebec ending in OT.

The B’s will be back at it on Saturday, hosting the Philadelphia Flyers at TD Garden.
