Big Bad Bruins
For Bruins, The Time to Turn it Around is Now
Let's face facts: what happened to the Bruins on Thursday night was a long time coming. For too many games, they'd been on cruise control for entire periods and coasting with the lead instead of trying to build it and put their foot on the throats of their opposition like they'd done in the first four weeks of the season.
Against inferior opposition, the Bruins would skate around for 40 minutes, expecting their vaunted third period to buoy them to two points, except that vaunted third period just wasn't showing up like it had in November and December.
Sure, they won some games and in spite of their often lackadaisical efforts, the team is 8-5-1 since the calendar turned to 2012, a clip that would translate to a 100-point season and a surefire playoff spot (Boston won the Northeast with 103 points, seven ahead of Montreal in 2011). But that was pedestrian compared to their 21-3-1 November and December (a 141-point pace if it continued for an entire season).
Is Tim Thomas Tradeable?
Even as late as Sunday evening, when Scott Hartnell was finishing off a natural hat trick, and Tim Thomas was allowing 5 goals to a team that he usually dominates (that was missing 2 key forwards), the idea of trading Tim Thomas would have been unthinkable.
The American-born goalie who turned in a dominant performance to end Boston's cup drought. The underdog story for the ages, whose toughness seemed to fit right in with the Bruins physical style of play.
As of Sunday evening, for public relations reasons, a Tim Thomas trade this coming offseason when his NMC expires on July 1, 2012 would have been extremely difficult.
What Will the Bruins 2012 Opening Night Roster Look Like?
It's no secret that the Bruins are going to struggle to bring back everyone on their roster for the 2012-13 season. But at this point, figuring out what the most important pieces to re-sign are is getting a bit tricky.
Still unsigned heading into 2012 are Forwards Chris Kelly, Benoit Pouliot, Zach Hamill, Gregory Campbell, Shawn Thornton and Daniel Paille. Defensemen Johnny Boychuk and Joe Corvo are also set to become free agents at the end of the year. And there's the little matter of one Tuukka Rask, who's also looking at RFA status once July 1st arrives, with his value only increasing with every minute he plays.
But that's not all. While there are key pieces of the Stanley Cup team in flux for 2012, the summer of 2013 will see Nathan Horton, Milan Lucic, Tyler Seguin, Andrew Ference and Tim Thomas enter into free agency, as well. Each of these players, if they continue their current play (with maybe Thomas being the exception due to age) will be due a serious extension/raise before they're back in Black and Gold.
Could Cammalleri Deal Be Sign of Things to Come to Boston?
"To be honest with you, that wasn't an issue in our locker room, we had put it to rest. There are lots of things that people say that are taken out of context and even if they're said, life goes on."
Marchand Suspended 5 Games: Did the NHL Hurt Itself With This Decision?
This week started off in rough fashion for the Bruins as disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan announced that Marchand’s hit on Sami Salo during Saturday's game warranted a five-game suspension for the young winger. Shanahan reasoned that because the shot was a dangerous, avoidable, predatory, from a repeat offender, and, at the end of the day, clipping. While others claim Marchand deserves the punishment and that the ruling is just, the call is still gutless. Beyond that, this ruling is the setup for horrible precedent. And as we all know, the league's actions going forward are to be performed in a manner that is set by the precedent it has made with prior cases.

Marchand to have Disciplinary Hearing Monday
Monday the league has scheduled a phone call with Brad Marchand on his hit to Sami Salo during Saturday's meeting of last year's Stanley Cup finalists. The hit was called clipping during the game and due to Salo sustaining an injury on the play, Marchand was automatically given a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. The hit changed the tone of the game and lead to the Canucks taking over with 2 power play goals. Now the Bruins might take another blow from it as Brad could see up to a 5 game suspension.
Beyond the Numbers: Is the Krejci Deal a Smart One for the Bruins?
Yesterday it was announced that the Boston Bruins have come to terms with center David Krejci on a new 3 year deal that will carry an average cap hit of 5.25 per season beginning next season. The news has many fans rejoicing as the lack of news on the subjects over the past few months left many question marks. Did the Bruins see their point leader from the season before as still part of it's core going forward? Was what Krejci asking for above and beyond what he's proven he's worth? Did management believe that Seguin would be moving into that top line center slot sooner rather than later? Was Krejci expendable, especially with rumors that a certain Anaheim Duck might be available in a swap?
Zach Hamill's play impacting the Bruins
Sometimes Bruins fans do not have the nicest things to say about Zach Hamill. There were high expectations for the 2007 first round draft pick who was selected 8th overall just before Logan Couture went to the San Jose Sharks. Hamill, who played in the WHL, had the Everett Silvertip's single season assist and points record as well as claiming seven Silvertips franchise career records in his draft year that could only poise him for success.
