New AHL alignment and playoff structure

From the playoff standpoint, it's identical to the NHL system save for the best of 5 opening round. The divisions themselves are largely self-explanatory, but you'd think they'd have switched Charlotte and Abbotsford. Interesting that NY teams are in 3 divisions among both conferences!

Bruins return Matt Bartkowski to Providence

The Bruins announced on Saturday that they have assigned defenseman Matt Bartkowski to the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. Bartkowski logged a team-low 4:42 of ice time (all even-strength) during Friday night's 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders. Bartkowski has appeared in 6 games for the NHL club this season.

Bruins make a pair of minor league deals

The Bruins announced today that they have made two trades involving minor leaguers. The B's sent forward Levi Nelson to the Tampa Bay Lightning organization in exchange for Juraj Simek. The Bruins also made a minor deal with the Florida Panthers sending Jeff LoVecchio and Jordan Knackstedt to Panthers for defenseman Sean Zimmerman and a conditional 7th round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Jamie Arniel sent back to Providence

The Bruins announced today that they have assigned forward Jamie Arniel to the Providence Bruins. The 21-year-old Kingston, Ontario native made his NHL debut on Sunday in a 4-1 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers. The Bruins called up Arniel on an emergency basis over the weekend after Jordan Caron and David Krejci came down with the flu. Both Caron and Krejci were on the ice for practice in Wilmington this morning and are expected to be ready to go on Thursday when the team travels to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers.

McGrattan placed on waivers to be sent to Providence

The Bruins placed forward Brian McGrattan on waivers today with the intention of assigning him to the Providence Bruins. If McGrattan goes unclaimed for 48 hours, he will report to Providence. Peter Chiarelli on his decision to waive McGrattan to send him to Providence (via NESN.com): "I felt it was time for him to go down there. Frankly, it [McGrattan's toughness] was something I thought we might have needed to start the year. I'm not saying we still won't need him. I spoke with him and there's a good chance he'll be back, but it was time to put him down and get him off the cap for one thing. We'll see where it goes from there."

Bartkowski assigned to Providence

The Bruins announced today that they have assigned rookie defenseman Matt Bartkowski to the Providence Bruins. Bartkowski will stay with the team until they return to Prague but cannot practice with the team or dress for this weekend's games against the Phoenix Coyotes. The Bruins now have 24 players (including non-roster invitee Brian McGrattan, who is on a professional try-out agreement and spare goalie Nolan Schaefer). So, the only question mark left is whether on or not the B's sign McGrattan. This seems to be pretty much their opening night roster. According to Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe and Boston.com, this is how the B's lined up in practice today: Wheeler Bergeron Recchi Lucic Krejci Horton Paille Seguin Ryder/Caron Marchand Campbell Thornton/McGrattan Chara Boychuk Stuart Ference Hunwick Seidenberg Bartkowski McQuaid Rask Thomas Schaefer

Anyone else going to Providence opening night on Friday?

I linked to the promotions schedule..."Hand Sanitizer Night" is right up my alley. Got another flex pack this year with the 4 free seats to opening night, so I'll be down there this Friday (I think I'll miss some of the 1st, I'm busy in Boston until 6 so I will have to Schumacher my way down 95). Good chance to take a second look at Sauve, Colborne, etc.

Bruins trim roster to 25

The B's trimmed their roster to 25 today, sending Joe Colborne, Zach Hamill, Jeremy Reich, Steve Kampfer, Jeff LoVecchio, and Wyatt Smith to Providence.

Tonight's Rookie Game to be streamed live

For anyone that isn't able to get out to the TD Garden tonight, the Bruins will be streaming tonight's rookie game vs. the New York Islanders live on their website.

Trent Whitfield likely out for season with Achilles injury

Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com is reporting that Bruins depth forward Trent Whitfield is likely on the shelf for the entire season after rupturing his Achilles tendon while working out. According to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal, Whitfield injured the tendon while running back on August 13th. The Pro-Jo is reporting that Whitfield had surgery and will be out until at least mid-February.
