On December 13, 1990 the Hartford Whalers took a short trip up to Boston. They probably wish they never suited up that night, because it certainly wasn't the outcome they expected once they took the ice. The Bruins and the Whalers has a solid rivalry going until the Whalers shipped out of Hartford and moved to North Carolina. During the early nineties the rivalry was alive and well. However for Pat Verbeek and friends this was one of those nights that they probably wanted to forget about.
This meeting between the two team was full of action. Goals, fights, cheap shots and how about a line brawl. Cam Neely and his best friend Ulf Samuelsson dropped the gloves where Neely absolutely destroys his favorite target. Neely earned himself the infamous Gordie Howe Hat Trick and Samuelsson was an assist short of repeating that feat. Ray Bourque and Craig Janney added an impressive 4 assists each during the game while Andy Moog made 24 saves for the win. What would a blowout and line brawl be with out Lyndon Byers throwing in his two cents. Byers would receive a game misconduct as well as a 10 game suspension for leaving his bench and taking cheap shots at Pat Verbeek, Ron Francis and Ed Kastalic as shown in the classic video below.
The Bruins would drop 8 goals on the Whalers that night in one of the most lopsided scores in the rivals history. The two teams had a handful of classic battles over the Whalers short history. There was always gloves being thrown to the ice and punches thrown into each other faces. The two teams didn't like each other and each and every time they faced off it was a battle. The Bruins and Whalers would face each other later during the 1990-91 division semi-finals where Boston would take the series 4-2. The Whalers just couldn't seem to get that edge over the Bruins and they were far from it on this night yet again.
