twas the night before world juniors and all throughout Sweden
not a player was stirring, not even Jake Slavin;
The skates were all hung by Old Glory with care,
in hopes that gold medals soon would hang there;
The players were nestled all snug in their beds,
With dreams of beating Canada nestled in their heads;
O’Regan and Grzelcyk in their great BU caps,
Had just settled in for a long pre-game nap;
When outside their dorms arose such a loud noise,
They sprang from their beds to check on the boys.
Away to the windows they flew in a flash,
threw open the fönsters, and opened the sash
The northern lights on the lawn they sparkled and shone,
in red white and blue - premonitions they’d OWN.
When what to their wondering eyes should appear
but twenty bald eagles, their beaks sharp and sheer;
And a tall guy, decked out in stars stripes and - well, damn -
They knew in a moment it must be UNCLE SAM
And quick to his shoulders those eagles they came
As he whistled and shouted and called out some names;
"NOW BARBER NOW BUTCHER NOW CARRICK AND HARTMAN;
ON MATTEAU AND KERDILES AND GILLIES AND STEPAN!
To the top of the standings, to the top of them all -
Beat Canada, beat Sweden, beat Finland, beat them all!"
The USA takes on the Czech Republic today at 11:30 AM on NHL Network.
