NHL Draft 2013: An Interactive Visualization of Drafts of Years Past

Ever wonder what junior teams and leagues are drafted from the most? Is Canada the most-drafted from country EVERY year? Now you can take a look for yourself.

Using Tableau software, I've put together this draft dashboard. It took weeks of compiling data from hockey DB (all dumped into one really big excel file) but FINALLY, a month before the draft, it's done. After the 2013 draft, I'll add that data in.

Version 2, to be released right before the draft, will have an additional tab that allows you to come at the data from the junior team angle -- answering the question "which NHL teams draft most frequently from each junior team?" rather than approaching it from the NHL angle, like in this tab.

This was a really fun project, and some of the numbers were really interesting to see -- for example, I had no idea that in the 2011 draft, the most-drafted-from CHL team was the Saint John Sea Dogs. Makes sense, as they won the Memorial Cup, but still neat to see.

So, without further ado, here it is. To open in it's own window, click here.
