Number Dump: How Many AHL games is too many AHL games? and other questions answered

Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

Recently, in a discussion of Ryan Spooner, it was brought up how many AHL games he had played and whether that was enough, too much, etc. So I figured I'd aggregate a bunch of data from www.hockey-reference.com and www.eliteprospects.com for everyone who had either played a game this year or was on the roster for the current Bruins. This is as of this past weekend, so last night's game isn't involved for anyone. Let's start with definitions:

  • CHL: Any time in WHL, QMJHL, or OHL
  • NCAA: Any time in NCAA division-1
  • Other: European leagues, ECHL in some cases, but not European junior leagues. Where I could make the distinction, tried to keep it to top-tier european leagues.
  • AHL: Time in the American Hockey League
  • NHL: Time in the National Hockey League

I've broken it down by postion. Here are the raw totals:

POS CHL NCAA Other AHL NHL
F 2868 248 816 2022 6456
C 1287 0 492 813 3488
RW 799 248 315 943 861
LW 782 0 9 266 2107
D 476 338 164 772 2328
G 0 0 182 195 205
TOT 3344 586 1162 2989 8989

Those are the raw totals. Granted, they don't tell you how many players made up those totals. So let's look at averages. Here's the aggregate:

POS AGE CHL NCAA Other AHL NHL
C 29.1 160.9 0.0 61.5 101.6 436.0
RW 26.2 133.2 41.3 52.5 157.2 143.5
LW 29.0 195.5 0.0 2.3 66.5 526.8
F 28.1 204.9 124.0 116.6 134.8 358.7
D 27.9 68.0 48.3 23.4 110.3 332.6
G 26.0 0.0 0.0 91.0 97.5 102.5
TOT 27.9 196.7 117.2 105.6 130.0 332.9

Well that could be useful, but we'd need to see the totals for each individual player, wouldn't we? I think so. Luckily, I've got it right here:

Note that the "Other" column usually has something in it. Most often, it its a handful of "Other" games, those were lockout-induced. Some notes:

  • Svedberg seems to be hitting the NHL right along the Rask path.
  • Bergeron's AHL time came after his first season in the NHL, due to the lockout. I couldn't figure out way that made sense to cut this stuff out, so I didn't.
  • It still surprises me to see that Jordan Caron has 100+ NHL Games Played. It shouldn't, but it does.

So, anything else stand out to y'all?
