Not if they can help it

Last night, The Hockey News' Ken Campbell dropped a worrisome bit of news on us all:

So this could be trouble. Looking at the forecast from the NOAA:

Today A slight chance of rain after 4pm. Areas of fog after 5pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Tonight Rain, mainly after 10pm. Areas of fog before 8pm, then areas of fog after 10pm. Low around 36. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Thursday A chance of rain, mainly before 7am. Areas of fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 46. Calm wind becoming west 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Thursday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 29. West wind around 5 mph.
New Year's Day Mostly sunny, with a high near 40. West wind 3 to 7 mph.
Friday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 27.

It doesn't seem like a lot, but it could wreak havoc on what is supposed to be an NHL-ready ice surface on Friday at 1pm. The NHL has put in a fair amount of work putting this all together, so I don't think they would cancel this lightly. But, the main spectacle needs to be protected by the league. Here's hoping they figure out a tarp for the rain tonight and everything can happen as planned.
