Rob O'Gara is our 22nd under-25 prospect

Yale's star defenseman is a year away from pro hockey, but developing steadily.

  • Position: Defense
  • Height: 6'4"
  • Weight: 205 lbs
  • League last year: NCAA
  • Age this year: 22
  • Acquired: Drafted 151st overall in the 5th round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft

Rob O'Gara was picked in the 5th round of the 2011 draft, and has been working through a degree at a little school in Connecticut known as Yale University. Remember them? They won the national championship a few years back. And, Rob was an everyday roster player on that national championship team. Indeed, it was his freshman year. Since then, his stats have gotten better. He was the leading defensive scorer for Yale last year, tied for second overall on the team (only 2 points behind the leader).

Last year, Yale came in third in the ECAC and went 18-10-5. As previously mentioned, Rob was a big part of that. He won the ECAC award for defensive defensemen while doing all of that scoring. He's entering his senior year this year, and we'll see what that gets us. If nothing else, it'll get him a degree. Let's hope he gets a little more than that out of his hockey career, though. You can never have enough 6'4" scoring defensemen that win defensive awards.

I don't think he'll be able to wear his preferred #4 if he makes the Bruins, though. Here he is (in black) battling Brandon Carlo (in white) in development camp:
