David Pastrnak's World Junior tournament is over. Here's how to get him into the lineup vs Washington

David Pastrnak was released by Don Sweeney to go to the World Juniors, and he played very well. His tournament is over now, after running into team USA in the quarterfinals. The Bruins should work to get him into the lineup as soon as possible. The roster is full, so they've got some options as to how to do that. Just for comparison, here were the forward lines for the Winter Classic, per the Bruins twitter account:

  • Eriksson—Bergeron—Griffith
  • Beleskey—Spooner—Connolly
  • Vatrano—Ferraro—Khokhlachev
  • Rinaldo—Talbot—Hayes

Griffith and Khokhlachev have already been sent down. The Bruins also have Joonas Kemppainen, David Krejci, and Chris Kelly on LTIR. Brad Marchand is obviously still suspended. And Tyler Randell is on the roster but did not play in the Winter Classic.

Here's who played defense or was at least listed as a defenseman (LOOKING AT YOU, KEVAN MILLER) and spent time on the ice at the Winter Classic:

  • Chara—Seidenberg
  • Krug—McQuaid
  • Morrow—K. Miller

Colin Miller and Zach Trotman are also both on the roster, even though they didn't play.

So that's 20 total players on the current active roster. One has to go to bring back The Legend, David Pastrnak. Here are a few options the Bruins have:

  • Send down Max Talbot: Max Talbot was waived on November 29th, sent down on the 30th, and called back up on the 8th. Waiver rules say that a player has to go on waivers if they're roster eligible and haven't played 10 games or been on the roster for 30 days since clearing waivers. Max Talbot has played 9 games and just barely been on the roster less than 30 days, so he can be sent down on the power of the waivers previously filed. If waived, the only issue would be, who plays fourth line center? Both Vatrano and Rinaldo are listed as centers on the Bruins' NHL roster, but between the two of them they've lost all 3 faceoffs combined. This isn't a big issue over a long season, but having to run out Bergeron for every faceoff will get tiring eventually.
  • Waive Kevan Miller: He was directly responsible for so many goals yesterday. Just let him go. (This is unrealistic, we're stuck with him forever.)
  • Send down Tyler Randell: Possible, as he's an extra forward and doesn't play much. But that would put the Bruins at exactly 12 healthy, unsuspended forwards. It's cutting it close, and would require waivers.
  • Send Colin Miller or Joe Morrow back down: Yeah, this is probably the one. There are just more extra defensemen available than forwards in Boston right now. Sending Joe Morrow down would require waivers.
