In order to have time to clear waivers, players who will not start the year in the NHL and are not waiver exempt must have been placed on waivers by noon today. Having already seen Zac Rinaldo (RIP 2017 3rd round pick) clear waivers, the Bruins placed the three bubble players who would need to clear waivers to be sent down on waivers in Tim Schaller, Tyler Randell, and Seth Griffith. The Bruins must be down to 23 players on their roster by 5 PM tomorrow.
Seth Griffith is the main player of the trio who the Bruins would need to worry about being claimed, as he is something of a AAAA player, having torn it up in the AHL just under a point per game (158 points in 165 games, .95 ppg) but is undersized at 5’9”, 192 pounds. He finished second in the AHL last year with 77 points in 57 games, and was second in points per game to Frank Vatrano.
This leaves the Bruins forward group with Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, Ryan Spooner, David Krejci, David Backes, Matt Beleskey, Jimmy Hayes, Dominic Moore, and Riley Nash as locks, with David Pastrnak included in that list. Austin Czarnik and Frank Vatrano are likely going on Injured reserve, freeing up those roster spots and making it so up to four forward spots are up for grabs still, with Jake DeBrusk, Danton Heinen, Noel Acciari, Brian Ferlin, Sean Kuraly, and as long as they are not claimed, Schaller, Randell, and Griffith.
The defense is already mostly locked in, unless McQuaid is out long enough to warrant IR, or they decide to go with 8 defensemen by either signing Ehrhoff, or keeping Carlo or O’Gara. Injuries will likely determine that, as both Carlo and O’Gara can be called up and sent down whenever. The Bruins defense will be Zdeno Chara, Torey Krug, John-Michael Liles, Adam McQuaid, Colin Miller, Kevan Miller, Joe Morrow, and potentially one of the other three names listed.
