Terrible news from Catalunya today.

Tragic news today as Moto2 mainstay Luis Salom passed away after a crash during free practice.

Salom was entering turn 12 of the Barcelona circuit towards the end of the second free practice session when he crashed heavily. The session was red flagged immediately.

After initial assessment at the on-track medical centre, he was airlifted to the nearby hospital but sadly medical staff were unable to do anything for him, and he died from his injuries on Friday afternoon.

Condolences have come in from throughout the motorcycling community, and we extend ours too.

At the request of Salom's family, the weekend will go ahead as planned. The riders will not use turn 12 though, instead the F1 chicane will be used. Practice will be extended on Saturday to allow the riders time to adjust to the new layout.

Another tragic reminder of the dangers of motorcycle racing. Rest in peace. Luis.
