Urho Vaakanainen is headed to the World Junior Championships

The once-concussed youngster should be getting back on the ice soon.

It’s been nearly two months since Urho Vaakanainen was concussed by an elbow from Ottawa’s Mark Borowiecki. It appears that he’s just about ready to return to game action...just not with the Bruins.

The B’s announced tonight that Vaakanainen will join Team Finland for the upcoming World Junior Championships tournament.

It’s easy to forget that Vaakanainen is only 19, making him eligible for the big U20 showcase.

Vaakanainen had been skating with the Bruins, but there were never any reports that he was close to getting back in games. It should go without saying that the Bruins wouldn’t release him to Team Finland if he didn’t have a clean bill of health, but you never know with the NHL.

The Finnish team kicks off its tournament with a Boxing Day match-up with Sweden at 10:30 PM.
