David Backes in the waning minutes of a dismal game against the Devils did a really dumb thing to New Jersey’s Blake Coleman in hitting him directly in the head with his shoulder.
The NHL Player Safety department quickly meted justice and now Backes is suspended for three games.

Boston’s David Backes has been suspended for three games for an illegal check to the head on New Jersey’s Blake Coleman. https://t.co/hpBwU4gKmK— NHL Player Safety (@NHLPlayerSafety) December 28, 2018
A transcript of the explanation:
It is important to note that the head is the main point of contact on this hit. While Backes does graze Coleman’s shoulder on the way to making to making contact, the brunt of the force of the hit ends up on Coleman’s head....It’s also important to note that the head contact here was avoidable.
There’s not much here that isn’t pretty black and white. It was a dumb hit, it was avoidable, and Backes is considered a repeat offender (over his career, mind you), so he’s getting three games for this. He’s also getting a $219k fine for this, donated directly to the Player’s Emergency Assistance Fund.
Backes will likely be back in the lineup for the B’s by January 8th against the Wild.
Do you think this is a fair suspension?
