Late in the 1st period up 2-0 in Tampa, versus a powerhouse Lighting team, David Backes crashed the net and tangled awkwardly with a Tampa Bay player. In the process he appears to have been cut, perhaps seriously by the skate.
Here’s the full David Backes sequence, def. seems to have been caught by a skate blade in an unprotected area. #nhlbruins pic.twitter.com/INa14u2YhZ

Backes immediately grabbed his leg and started skating towards the bench while appearing to be bleeding as Boston Bruins trainer Don DelNegro helped him off the ice and down the tunnel. It has been a eventful week for veteran player, with a suspension and match penalty already occuring. Here’s hoping Backes is okay as the Bruins struggle with numerous injuries.
Edit: As of the start of the 2nd, Backes has not returned.
UPDATE: He will not return per the Bruins
UPDATE: David Backes suffered a laceration above his right knee requiring several stitches. David is resting and will not return to tonight's game.
