The Providence Bruins are keeping their big man around for another season. According to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal, the P-Bruins and Chris Breen have agreed to terms on a standard AHL contract.

Breen, 6-foot-7 and 226 pounds, has been with Providence since the 2014-2015 season. The rugged defenseman has amassed five goals and 33 assists in 217 games, and has been an alternate captain in each of the past three seasons.

With Tommy Cross rumored to be testing free agency, this signing of Breen is an important one for Providence. Not only is Breen a veteran of nine AHL seasons, the big defenseman has become much more of a presence on and off the ice in recent years.

If the P-Bruins lose Cross, who happens to be their captain, Breen’s role is all the more important, especially with all the young defensemen potentially coming to Providence this season.
