Random Bruins highlight: Johnny Boychuk sends a Sabre into another dimension

When: April 19, 2010

What: Johnny Boychuk straight up bundles Matt Ellis during the first round of the NHL playoffs.

A clean, solid hit is a dying art in the NHL, but Johnny Boychuk was still throwing them with regularity back in 2010.

Boychuk showed an ability to read a play and step up when the time is right pretty often during his Bruins career, but no hit was more thunderous than the one he laid on Matt Ellis during Game 3 of the 2010 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

Boychuk caught Ellis by surprise; in the video, you can almost see the “oh shit” moment where Ellis realizes what’s about to happen.

#55 kept his elbow down and managed to avoid targeting the head. No penalty was called, though Ellis left the ice dazed. Boychuk finished the sequence by firing a puck on Ryan Miller for good measure.

Ellis would recover and go on to have a pretty decent NHL and AHL career, but his most famous highlight will likely be one he wishes he could have avoided.
