Don Sweeney Nominated for GM of the Year

With a stellar slew of moves, Sweeney is deserving of the nomination

NHL: NHL Draft Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Tonight, Don Sweeney was announced as one of three finalists for General Manager of the Year award. The other finalists are Doug Armstrong of the St. Louis Blues and Don Waddell of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sweeney has made several additions, both in the offseason and at the trade deadline, that have proved fruitful. July 1 signings Chris Wagner and Joakim Nordstrom have stabilized the fourth line. Jaroslav Halak played incredibly and ate up valuable minutes to spell Tuukka Rask and give him a rest. Marcus Johansson and Charlie Coyle have added a scoring punch and proved to be reliable scorers in the postseason. Sweeneys’ additions to an already competitive roster have pushed it over the top and allowed the team to make a run for the Stanley Cup.

The winner will be announced June 19 in Las Vegas at the NHL Awards.
