In honor of this joyous day of overpayments and general chaos, you get the rare MORNING Public Skate. A true treat.
Free agency kicks off today at noon Eastern time. It is after that time that any of the league’s unrestricted free agents will be free to sign with whoever throws them the most bags of cash.
It will be interesting to see what happens on this weird free agency day. Usually, when free agency kicks off on July 1, there’s a flurry of activity. Most of the high-profile guys end up off the big board pretty quickly.
This year, it’s likely that will still be the case. However, if teams are under budget constraints across the league, you could see a guy like, say, Alex Pietrangelo getting what he feels is a low offer on Day 1 and waiting it out, only to find that’s as good as it’s going to get.
It probably won’t happen, but who knows?
There’s been plenty of movement around the league already too. Josh Anderson signed a big deal with Montreal. Anton Khudobin has said he’s going to test the market. Chicago has said it won’t be signing Corey Crawford.
In Bruins Land, the latest news, per Frank Seravalli, is that the Bruins are standing firm with their 6-year, $6.5 million AAV offer to Torey Krug. He’ll see what’s out there before circling back.
So...let’s get to it!
