Hockey East Tournament Recap: Top Dogs Again

Northeastern blew the doors off of UConn to secure their third consecutive HEA title and the third seed in the NCAA tournament.

Northeastern 9 Connecticut 1

After three games of rough starts Northeastern decided that this would be a full 60-minute game. Skylar Fontaine would start the scoring off a little of six minutes in on a highlight reel passing play to give NU a lead they would never relinquish. Eight minutes later Jess Schyrver would get her first goal of the game before UConn would pick up a rebound after Aerin Frankel made multiple saves but was unable to contain the puck. Right before the end of the period tournament MVP Alina Mueller would add another goal. Both of the next two periods would see Northeastern add goals in the first minutes.

The nine goals, which were scored by eight different skaters, broke the record for goals in a championship game, the eight goal margin was also the largest eclipsing the previous record for both when UNH defeated Boston College 6-0 in 2006.

Northeastern will now play host to Princeton on Saturday as the 3rd seed. Due to other results had Northeastern not won today they would’ve fallen to the 5th seed and travelled to Princeton.
