Editor’s note: This past week has been Marvel Week across SB Nation. None of us on the site are big Marvel people, so we didn’t have much to contribute until Angelina remembered these jerseys. Enjoy!
The ECHL has held a Marvel-themed night for the past three seasons, where for one night, the likes of Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and the Guardians take over an arena.
Each team, home and away, gets in on the action, donning a different superhero on their jersey. It’s a fun night where fans, staff, and players get involved to create a unique experience.
The Atlanta Gladiators, the Bruins’ ECHL affiliate, have mixed up their choices of Marvel superheroes during the last three seasons.
The Glads squeaked in their Marvel night before the 2019-20 season was cut short and got to show off the full Thor look.
The jerseys throughout the league for this night have differed, from character logos (like the Orlando Solar Bears’ Star Lord above) to coordinating jerseys and socks that make the characters actually come to life, like the Glads’ Thor sweater.
Previously, the Gladiators chose Groot for one of their jerseys. While I’m a huge “Guardians of the Galaxy” fan, I’m not as keen on this jersey. Anyone can throw Groot’s adorable face on something and it will look good, but could you picture a jersey, shell and socks that make a player look like a tree?
Exactly. I know this is still a new-ish night for the league, but the possibilities for the future are endless for exciting creations. It’s the ECHL, have some fun with it.
But the best jerseys are the stripped down ones where you instantly recognize who they represent. The Gladiators’ Captain America jersey is simple yet effective.
This is one they wore on the road last season. They also chose Captain America for the 2017-18 season, when the ECHL first collaborated with Marvel for the night.
The Marvel night is probably the highlight specialty jersey of the ECHL season, and if you love comics like me, it’s a cool way to bridge two different worlds. I hope for the seasons to come, the jerseys of the Gladiators and other teams continue to bring these Marvel characters to life with iconic looks.
Or better yet, look to their mutant X-Men counterparts. I’m just picturing a Wolverine jersey now...YES PLEASE.
If the NHL and Bruins could rock a Marvel superhero on their chest for one night during the year, who would you want it to be? Who on the B’s roster do you think would be the most excited about it?
