Five preseason games down, one to go!
The B’s lost to the Flyers in Philadelphia last night, 2-1 in overtime.
Jack Studnicka had another strong night (scoring the lone Bruins goal), as did Jeremy Swayman (34 saves).
With just one preseason game to go and a number of regulars expected to get a run-out in that one, we may see a number of cuts today into tomorrow.
Much of the discourse after last night’s game surrounded the question of whether or not Studnicka has forced himself into a roster spot with his strong play, which is a fair question...except I’m really not sure where you’d put him.
If you say Studnicka could play 2C and Charlie Coyle could go back to 3C, then where does Erik Haula go? 4C? Then what? TOO MANY C’s.
Of course, you could argue that if Studnicka has really claimed his spot, you could make a trade.
The problem with that is that:
- Studnicka hasn’t done it in the regular season.
- You just signed Haula and aren’t likely to deal him.
- Coyle’s value is the lowest it has been since you got him, and won’t be easy to move.
You could also argue that if Studnicka is the best option, you don’t let things like “you just signed Haula,” for example, dictate how you line up.
I guess this is why Bruce Cassidy makes the lineup decisions, not me.
Today’s discussion topic
Who’s your starting goalie on opening night? Has to be Swayman at this point, right?
