Jonas Gustavsson signs with Boston Bruins for $700,000 for one year

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

The two Bruins goalies who both lent themselves best to music I listened to in high school have been battling for the backup spot on the Bruins. The Bruins just announced that Jonas Gustavsson, previously on a Pro Tryout contract, was signed to a one year deal:

This may bode poorly for Jeremy Smith's chances to do damage in the NHL to start the season. Luckily for him, he was pretty dang good in the AHL last season, and Jonas Gustavsson's career has had a fair share of injuries. What does this do to the depth chart? Well, Malcolm Subban and Zane McIntyre are already in Providence, so it's likely that one of the three moves down to the ECHL. Whoever that is will get more playing time (good!) but also be playing against worse opposition, which is less good.

The backup goalie is pretty important, because we've seen a bad backup goalie mean that Tuukka Rask gets in too many games and it makes his overall play worse. So, here's hoping whichever one "wins" is good enough to live up to it.
