It was a weekend where a 10 hour IMSA endurance race was a demolition derby, and NASCAR's new Chase for the Cup turned into a complete cluster. But none of that feels important, with the horrible accident that Jules Bianchi suffered at Suzuka on Sunday. As I write this on Sunday night, Bianchi is in intensive care with a severe head injury after undergoing surgery. The same weather that contributed to his accident also prevented a helicopter from being used for emergencies at the track, and instead he had to be taken by ambulance to nearby Mie Hospital. We'll share further updates as they roll in.
It's secondary at this point, but this is the first time in 2 decades that Formula One has had to deal with such a severe injury to one of it's drivers during a race weekend, and it will be interesting to see how the sport responds and what changes are made in the name of safety.
But that will come later. For now, only one thing can properly say what we're all feeling: Forza Jules, and keep fighting.
