Will we see supplemental discipline for Marchand’s latest misstep?

Early in the third period, with the Boston Bruins leading 1-0. Brad Marchand was assessed a major penalty (Interference) for his high hit on superstar John Tavares. As the video below shows, it followed a hit on David Pastrnak that seemed fairly innocuous.

Given Marchand’s history of stepping over the line, as well as his status as a true repeat offender under Department of Player Safety rules, we may see supplemental discipline forthcoming for the Bruins 2nd leading scorer.

Marchand has already missed 8 games this season due to injuries. He was most recently suspended two games for spearing Tampa Bay’s Jake Dotchin last year.

Marchand has been suspended 5 times and fined 3 times already in his career. As a result he won’t receive any leniency from the Department of Player Safety at this point in his career.

Suspensions:

2 suspension for elbowing R. J. Umberger in 2011

What are your thoughts? Will he face further discipline?

UPDATED:

Per Arthur Staple of Newsday, who covers the Islanders, Bruins forward Brad Marchand will not face any discipline. For most, myself included, this was a surprising choice given lateness of hit, Marchand’s reputation and repeat offender status, as well as the player he hits status as a face of the NHL.

A gutsy win by the Bruins, with a lot of key factors coming into play.

First Period:

The Bruins came out flying, quickly nabbing a 9-2 SOG advantage only 5 minutes into the game. From there, it turned into a defensive struggle, and fast. The only power play went to the Islanders, a Zdeno Chara slashing penalty that was quickly killed off. While the Bruins landed an 11-4 SOZ advantage for the period as a whole, something has to break. AFTER 1: Bruins 0, Islanders 0.

Second Period:

This is where things started to get chippy. After a big hit on Charlie McAvoy by Casey Cizikas, Jake DeBrusk stepped up to the plate and dropped the gloves with the Islanders fourth liner. DeBrusk netted a 2, 5, and 10 for his duties. The lone goal came from Brad Marchand on the power play, a soft wrister that somehow snuck under Jaroslav Halak’s pads.

The Islanders weren’t without chances this period, however, as they climbed to 18 shots, compared to the Bruins’ 23 pucks on goal. AFTER 2: Bruins 1, Islanders 0.

Third Period:

Brad Marchand takes a highly unnecessary major penalty getting his hands in the face of John Tavares only 25 seconds into the third. With sone lucky breaks (a few Isles minors), they were able to kill it off completely. Then, Jake DeBrusk struck.

Absolutely scintillating.

David Backes got thrown out of the game with 8:13 left for getting into a scuffle with Andrew Ladd, receiving a head-butting five minute major and a game misconduct. Anders Lee got a doorstep tap-in right as Frank Vatrano came out of the box from serving Backes’ minor with 3:08 left.

With an empty net, Danton Heinen sealed the deal on a 3-1 victory!

Looking at morning skates and practices leading up to tonight’s game, we get a sense of what both teams might put on the ice.

Bruins:

Brad Marchand - Patrice Bergeron - David Pastrnak

Patrice Bergeron took a maintenance day on Friday, but Bruce Cassidy expects him fully to be in the lineup. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Jake DeBrusk - David Krejci - Anders Bjork

This is a interesting line that rushed together at Friday’s practice, one that combines a lot of skill from Bjork, strength from DeBrusk and overall unifying talent and example from Krejci.

Danton Heinen - Riley Nash - David Backes

Backes continues to be worked into the lineup well, and looks to continue to contribute as well as he has as of late, the same to Riley Nash. Heinen fits in well as someone who has benefited from both of his line mates’ play.

Tim Schaller - Sean Kuraly - Noel Acciari

Both Frank Vatrano and Matt Beleskey practiced on Friday, but with Cassidy saying not just Bergeron, but also Acciari should fully be in the lineup, that seemingly leaves those two on the outside looking in.

Torey Krug - Brandon Carlo

Matt Grzelcyk - Kevan Miller

Honestly, nothing much to see here change-wise. Again, if it ain’t broke, don't fix it. These top six have worked well lately. Change is bound to come soon with the return of Adam McQuaid, but for now, no surprises.

Andrew Ladd - Mathew Barzal - Jordan Eberle

Again, the combination of Barzal and Eberle can’t be overlooked. Barzal has wheels and Eberle has benefited from the multitude of chances Barzal creates.

Brock Nelson - Anthony Beauvillier - Joshua Ho-Sang

With an optional skate for the Bruins this morning and not much said by Isles HC Doug Weight, we do get a little glimpse at tonight’s game.

On a snowy day here in Boston, we continue to await what the lineup will look like between the Bruins and Islanders. Both teams seem to have had an optional skate this morning, with the Isles doing a more formal skate yesterday afternoon at TD Garden. Regardless, both head coaches stated the goalie matchup!

After a big win on Thursday against the Coyotes, the B’s look to carry momentum into tonight’s bout.

Just The Facts:

What: The New York Islanders (16-9-3, 35pts, 4th in MET, 1st WC) visit the Boston Bruins (13-9-4, 30 pts, 3rd in ATL)

When: 7:00 PM ET

Where: TD Garden, Boston, MA

Why do you care: Could the Bruins have had Matt Barzal? Yeah, but they’re playing really good hockey regardless, and look to carry energy from their 6-1 victory over the Coyotes to a stiffer matchup.

Where to watch: NESN, MSG+

Where to listen: 98.5 The Sports Hub

Preview

Aside from a stretch of 10 minutes to start the second without a shot, the Bruins played an utterly dominant game, putting up a 6-pack against the Arizona Coyotes. Riley Nash continues to stand out as a surprising output of offensive firepower and goal scoring chances, while Tuukka Rask played yet another solid game in net.

The Isles are seeing a lot of success so far this season, including production from Barzal, the always deadly John Tavares, currently 3rd in the NHL with 17 goals, Josh Bailey, tied for the team lead in points with Tavares with 31, and a host of depth scoring. It always stings to see Johnny Boychuk not in the Spoked B, but with Nick Leddy, they make a shut down top defensive pairing. In goal, you could flip a coin to see who would start between Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss. Who the Bruins will face? We won't know until closer to gamete.

So what's the big deal about this game? It’s the level of competition. While it’s great to see the B’s put up the points in their game against Arizona, they aren't on the same level the Islanders are at this point in the season. Can the Bruins get it up for an inter-conference bout? If Tuukka Rask starts, can he put up yet another solid performance? It’s not the playoffs by any stretch of the means, but the Bruins ability to make the playoffs depends on how they play against contenders for the wildcard spot like New York.

Players to Watch:

Riley Nash has been really involved in the offense lately, setting up goals like the one to Danton Heinen, even scoring himself on nicely timed shots. It’s good to see depth making a big impact like he has as of late.

Watch the trio of Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak throughout the game. No, not just because they're fun, but Bruce Cassidy might think about spreading out the firepower and putting either Heinen or Bjork on the top pairing and putting Pasta with Krejci.

Charlie McAvoy continues to be a stud on defense, eating up minutes as a rookie some veterans dream of. His pairing with Zdeno Chara has benefited both defenseman tremendously, and hopefully the trend continues tonight.

The big question mark is who starts in net for the Isles: Halak or Greiss? Halak has the better numbers this season, but Greiss has proven to be tricky, and based on his playing schedule, could be between the pipes.

As flashy as Matt Barzal has been, one of the biggest surprises and a welcome return to NHL success is former Edmonton Oiler Jordan Eberle. With Barzal on the same line, he's been the beneficiary of a lot of chances, posting a 12-9-21 stat sheet so far.

NEVER 4GET:

Boy, does this team feel like a completely different one from just four years ago. Look at this game featuring old faces like Shawn Thornton, Milan Lucic, Dougie Hamilton, Dan Paille, Chris Kelly, I could go on and on. Also a BU connection in net for the Islanders, with former #1 draft pick Rick DiPietro.
