This one had a little bit of everything!

The Bruins and Flames met up at TD Garden on Tuesday, and despite the distance between the two teams, turned in a heated, chaotic affair. Ultimately, the Bruins got the win 5-2.

The game started on a high note, as David Backes, Riley Nash, and Danton Heinen came out flying. Nash had quick chance off the rush stopped by Calgary goalie David Rittich (starting in place of injured Mike Smith), but Backes fed him from behind the net for the first goal of the game just 28 seconds in.

From there, the first period went south. Matt Grzelcyk coughed up a bad turnover behind his own net just moments later, and Sam Bennett pounced for the game tying goal at 2:03.

The first period was largely a continuation of the sloppy defensive play typical of the Bruins’ last few games: Plenty of turnovers, missed checks, high danger chances surrendered.

At the 9:09 mark, Johnny Gaudreau cleaned up a rebound in a scrum to give the Flames a 2-1 lead that they would hold onto for the remainder of the period.

“That’s a heavy team with a lot of skill,” said Patrice Bergeron post-game. “In the first we had a few breakdowns again, but you have to come back and do a lot better.”

In the second period they did just that.

Amidst a slew of scrums and penalties, the Bruins poured on 16 shots in the period, largely dominating the puck throughout. After killing off a Calgary power play chance, the Bruins attacked with Nash, Time Schaller, and Charlie McAvoy on the rush. Nash finished a sweet pass from Schaller to tie the game at 16:20.

The game’s chaos was capsulized near the end of the period, when Schaller clipped Rittich’s skate on a fly-by. Rittich fell, shall we say, dramatically to the ice, and Schaller was called for tripping. Embellishment was a theme throughout for the Flames, as they sold call after call.

Nonetheless, the Bruins killed that penalty, as they did all five of the Flames chances.

I asked Tuukka Rask about his teams performance on the penalty kill: “Yeah, we did a great job. Kept them to the outside, not a lot of rebounds,” he said. “I think it was one of the biggest reasons we got the win today. It gave us some momentum. Big kill at the end of the second, and a big start in the third.”

In the third, Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy moved David Pastrnak off the top line, replacing him with David Backes.

It worked, as Patrice Bergeron scored, first on the power play (off a lovely pass from Torey Krug), then on a deflection set up by Backes and Brad Marchand. Halfway through the third, the Bruins had gone up 4-2.

“Stroke of genius, huh?” Cassidy joked when asked about the line shakeup. He did admit he was partly sending a message to Pastrnak, who took a bad penalty and wasn’t dangerous most of the night. “You’re going to have tough matchups come [the playoffs].”

Pastrnak was nonplussed, saying “To be honest, I don’t really think about. I don’t mind playing with anyone.”

As the game wound down, the Flames pulled Rittich with about four minutes left. Zdeno Chara promptly scored on a length-of-the-ice shot, putting this one out of reach.

The game was filled with scrums, including one where Brad Marchand was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct minor, and the crowd turned hard on Rittich after his tumble.

The Bruins will be please to have another two points in their pocket going into their Western Canada trip. That starts Saturday in Vancouver.

The Flames dove into the Garden and were extinguished

This one started quick, with the trio of Danton Heinen, Rick Nash, and David Backes pinning back their ears and dominating the first shift. After being stuffed on a close attempt, Nash didn’t miss off the behind the net feed from Backes, just 28 seconds in.

About a minute and a half later, Noel Acciari left Matt Grzelcyk in a bind behind the Bruins net. Grzelcyk didn’t navigate it very well, and Sam Bennett did the rest to tie it at one.

Tuukka Rask couldn’t smother a slap shot, and a scramble ensued. Johnny Gaudreau mashed it home to give the Flames a 2-1 lead.

Fresh off a successful penalty kill, Riley Nash struck again late in the second off a sweet feed from Time Schaller. Tied game.

David Rittich, having a real good game, got a bit clipped by Schaller. He helped it along a wee bit, earning the ire of the Bruins crowd.

On their fourth power play of the game, the Bruins finally broke through, as Torey Krug sent Patrice Bergeron in alone. Bergeron potted it, and the Bruins went up 3-2.

Bruce Cassidy mixed up his lines a bit, switch Backes onto Bergeron’s wing. After a typically great defensive play, Bergeron deflected a Brad Marchand shot home.

With about four minutes to go, the Flames pulled the goalie. Zdeno Chara tried the long bomb and nailed it, salting it away at 5-2.

Yep. Eleven!

Prior to Tuesday’s game against the Flames, the Bruins will hold a ceremony to honor the eleven players who surpassed the 20 goal mark in the 1978-80 season:

Peter McNab (41), Terry O’Reilly (29), Bobby Schmautz (27), Stan Jonathan (27), Jean Ratelle (25), Rick Middleton (25), Wayne Cashman (24), Gregg Sheppard (23), Brad Park (22), Don Marcotte (20) and Bob Miller (20)

That’s a ton of goals right there.

The former players will also be joined by their coach (and current commentator) Don Cherry.

They even made a pretty sweet logo for the occasion:

It was one of Don Sweeney’s first acts as GM. How is it aging?

June 26th, 2015 was a busy day for newly minted Bruins GM Don Sweeney. Having taken over for Peter Chiarelli just over a month prior, Sweeney made waves on draft day first by trading Milan Lucic to the Kings in an expected cap-cutting measure, then by moving disgruntled Dougie Hamilton to Calgary.

The return for Lucic was easy to justify: Colin Miller, the 13th pick in the draft, and Martin Jones (Jones would be flipped a few days later to the Sharks for a first rounder and Sean Kuraly).

But the haul for Hamilton, was questionable: The Flames first round pick, and two second rounders. With all of these picks, along with their own, the Bruins were fully expected to package them up in a larger deal. Most notably, there was rampant speculation about moving up to the top of the draft to grab Boston College stud defenseman Noah Hanafin.

But that didn’t happen. The Bruins used all of their picks in the first two rounds of the draft.

With Hamilton returning to TD Garden tonight, let’s have a look at what happened to the assets acquired in exchange for young Dougie.

First Round Pick (No. 15): Zach Senyshyn

Perhaps most notable for being neither Mathew Barzal nor Kyle Connor, Senyshyn was the Bruins’ big reach of the 2015 draft. Most prognosticators had him going sometime in the second round, not the middle of the first.

Senyshyn’s development has been all over the map. His draft year was nothing special, but he was buried on a stacked roster of older players on the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The following year, with an elevated role, he exploded for 45 goals in 66 games, then followed it up with a 42-goal campaign before turning pro.

But this season, his first in the AHL, has been... problematic. Senyshyn has just 18 points in 43 games in a bottom six role. Most discouragingly, he has been a healthy scratch at times.

Of course, with three consecutive picks, it might not be totally fair to say that Senyshyn is the exact piece the Bruins got in the Hamilton trade. It really didn’t matter what order the three draftees were selected, so it might be smarter to say they got one third of Jakub Zboril, Jake Debrusk, and Senyshyn. Of those three, Debrusk has obviously been the most successful.

Second Round Pick (No. 45): Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson

Bruins fans were fortunate enough to watch JFK in his time with Boston University, putting up 30 points in 39 games as a freshman, then 33 points in 39 games as a sophomore. Playing a rounded, two-way style, the center stood out both at BU and at the World Junior for Sweden.

He’s spent this year, his first as a pro, in Providence. Continuing to develop as a do-it-all type center, he has 13 goals and 15 assists in 49 games. He seems on track to fill a middle-six role in the NHL at some point, so Sweeney seems to have done well here.

Perhaps the biggest question for JFK is whether he will be squeezed out by the franchise’s excellent depth at his position. If so, he would certainly make for an attractive piece in a trade.

Second Round Pick (No. 52): Jeremy Lauzon

There was very little hype about this defenseman when he was drafted, but Lauzon changed that quickly. He put up a monster year for the QMJHL’s Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, with 50 points in 46 games in 2015-16. He played big minutes and earned the team’s captaincy for the following season, and even scored a couple goals in limited time for Canada in the World Junior.

He’s slowed down since then, largely thanks to injuries. This year, his first as a pro, was put on hold after a concussion, forcing him out for 22 games. So far he has just two points in 25 games for Providence, but the jury is largely still out.

So here we are, going on three years since Hamilton’s departure, and what do the Bruins have to show?

So far, nothing.

Meanwhile, Hamilton has taken off. Skating alongside Mike Giordano, he has found his groove as an offensive playmaker, netting 43 and 50 points the last two seasons. He’s on pace for similar production this year. He leads the Flames’ defenders in CF% and in goal differential.

But all three prospects he netted still have a shot to make an impact in the NHL. At the very least, they have a shot to make an impact via trade.

Here’s hoping.

Game notes

The Bruins are coming off their weirdest game of the season, beating the Devils 5-3 on Sunday night. You can’t complain too much if you get the two points, but the Bruins were definitely not at their best, especially defensively. Pair that with Saturday’s loss to the lowly Sabres, and you’ve got a worrying trend potentially rearing its head. A solid sixty-minute effort tonight would do wonders to dispel any worries that Bruins have hit a wall.

The Flames have been real streaky lately. They won seven straight to start 2018, then lost six straight, and have now won four of their last five.

Mike Smith, who has been a revelation for the Flames this year, suffered an apparent groin injury at the end of Sunday’s win against the Islanders. He had to be helped off the ice and is confirmed out for this one. Instead, the Bruins will face backup David Rittich, who has been steady in limited action.

Calgary’s top two lines (Geaudreau - Monahan - Ferland and Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik) are a lot of fun. But their biggest strength this year has been their defensive play. The top pairing of Mark Giordano and Dougie Hamilton are as good a pairing as you’ll find.

Speaking of which, welcome back Dougie!

Never forget

Imagine a universe where Dougie can score from center ice on the Bruins. That universe existed last year. We’ve come a long way!
