A big game for the Czech, and his 4th hat trick.

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

David Krejci and the Bruins are running all over the Penguins right now, leading 8-3 in the late second as I write this post.

Much of that offense has come from David Krejci, who recorded the fourth hat trick of his career with the Bruins’ 7th goal.

His first got the Bruins on the board early in the first period:

His second, coming on the PP, made it 6-3 in the second. Great pass by Nick Holden.

His third came a few minutes later, also on the PP, with great patience and a nice tip from Brian Gionta.

Congrats to Krejci! How about three more in the third?

No penalty was called on the play. Uhhh...

About a billion different things happened in the first period of tonight’s Boston Bruins vs. Pittsburgh Penguins game.

Eight goals. A goalie change. A couple scrums. Weird bounces.

And this, a hit to the head of Charlie McAvoy by Patric Hornqvist.

Hornqvist with the hit right to McAvoy's head. pic.twitter.com/0kBr1imc7x
— #1 WINGELS FAN (@bruinshockeynow) March 2, 2018

Apologies for the “video of the TV thing,” but you get the point.

As you can see, Hornqvist makes principal contact with McAvoy’s head. No penalty was called on the play.

From Rule 48.1:

A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted. In determining whether contact with an opponent’s head was avoidable, the circumstances of the hit including the following shall be considered:

(i) Whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body and the head was not “picked” as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward.

(ii) Whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full body check unavoidable.

(iii) Whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way that significantly contributed to the head contact

My guess is that the refs thought McAvoy had his head lowered and that Hornqvist had nowhere else to hit, but it’s not like McAvoy suddenly ducked; his head was down the entire time.

McAvoy’s nose was gashed up pretty badly after the hit, but he remained in the game and finished the first period.

What do you think? Dirty hit, or did McAvoy put himself in a bad spot?

A couple of surprising scratches here...

It's hockey night in Boston...unless you're Danton Heinen or Matt Grzelcyk.

The team confirmed in a second Tweet that those two guys would indeed be healthy scratches. Interesting.

EDIT (12:11 PM): Apparently Grzelcyk is nursing a minor injury, so it is only one healthy scratch. Carry on.

Both guys could probably use a bit of a break, as neither is used to the full NHL grind.

However, sitting Heinen for Gionta is...yeah. It's something.

Expect Tuukka Rask in net.

A good test against the two-time defending Cup champs.

Just the facts

Phil Kessel: 26G-44A-70PTS

Sidney Crosby: 21G-48A-69PTS

Game notes

Believe it or not, the Penguins are peaking at the right time! Yes, again. The Pens were out of the playoff picture just a few weeks back, but now sit in third in the Metro with 76 points (3 behind first-place Washington). It’s funny to think that people once counted out a team with Crosby, Kessel, Malkin, etc. but here they are again.

Speaking of Malkin, is it possible that he’s somehow underrated? Malkin has played in the shadow of the best player on Earth for his entire career. Like Nicklas Backstrom in Washington, Malkin has put up elite numbers behind his even more elite teammate. This year, however, Malkin is leading the charge. The Russian forward has 76 points in 60 games. 76 points!!!! That’s a 104-point pace over a full season. Dude’s a monster.

The Penguins are 7-2-1 in their last ten, with the two losses coming in their last two games (including a Tuesday loss to New Jersey). They’re dealing with a big loss, as goalie Matt Murray is out with a concussion. The Pens are going to be forced to lean on Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith; Jarry, you’ll remember, was in net for parts of that bananas game the Bruins played in Pittsburgh back in January. Neither is quite an elite netminder.

Tonight is probably the night you REALLY feel Patrice Bergeron’s absence. Normally, he’d be a thorn in the side of Sidney Crosby; instead, he’ll be forced to watch from the 9th floor and hope his teammates can keep his buddy from running wild.

Zach Aston-Reese has made an impact in his rookie season with Pittsburgh. The former Northeastern Husky has 4 goals and 2 assists in 10 games. Unfortunately, he’s sidelined with an upper body injury, so he’ll have to admire that Northeastern Beanpot banner from the press box.

Two newcomers made their presence felt last time out, as Rick Nash and Tommy Wingels had strong games. What about Nick Holden? Maybe....? Bruce Cassidy wants to get him in a game sooner rather than later, and tonight might be the night. Or it might not be. MYSTERY!!!

Speaking of newcomers, former Senator Derick Brassard made his Pittsburgh debut on Tuesday night. He had 2 goals and 6 assists in the Bruins’ playoff series loss to Ottawa last spring, and brings another layer of talent to the Penguins...as if they needed it.

Tonight’s game will be an interesting contrast in styles: the league’s second-best defense against the league’s fifth-best offense. THE ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN.

Phil Kessel is great and any arguments to the contrary will not be heard.

Never forget

Ah, 2013.
