It wasn’t the most thrilling game of all time, but a win is a win.

(Note: This recap uses some NHL.com embedded videos, which you may not see if you’re on mobile or Apple News.)

After an unusual 8:08 puck drop following the Rick Middleton retirement ceremony, the Bruins came out flying, posting 5 of the first 6 shots on goal.

However, the Islanders regained traction, drawing a penalty and scoring on the delayed call. 1-0 Islanders.

The Islanders held the lead going into the locker room. Midway through the second frame, the Bruins drew a penalty of their own as David Backes went down due to a high stick from the Islanders’ Nick Leddy.

David Pastrnak connected with Brad Marchand to tie the game up. 1-1 tie.

That would be all the scoring we saw in regulation. In overtime, Tuukka Rask was immense, stopping breakaways from Jordan Eberle and Mat Barzal.

Rask would also stop all of the Islanders’ shots in the shootout, but he was matched at the other end by Robin Lehner until the recent call-up came calling.

Bruins win! 2-1 final.

Quick thoughts

This was a weird game. It seemed like each team had a stretch where it dominated, whether that domination was with physicality or speed. When it looked like one team was going to run over the other, the roles reversed.

The Islanders were noticeably trying to play a heavy game, which makes sense when your coach is Barry Trotz. They took the body at every opportunity, but the Bruins appeared to be up for the challenge.

Poor Jake DeBrusk took a beating tonight. He crashed into the boards twice, took a big hit and ended up face-down in his own crease in overtime. He hung in there, however, and played a decent overall game.

It’s too early to say Tuukka Rask is “back,” but he’s certainly well on his way. Rask has looked rock-solid since returning from his leave of absence, and is pretty much the only reason the Bruins even had a chance to earn a point tonight. The overtime stops on Eberle and Barzal were the big saves that certain segments of the fanbase say he never makes, which should go a long way toward boosting his confidence. No, a November game against the Islanders isn’t a spring game in Toronto, but it’s a start.

Speaking of taking a beating, I don’t know how David Backes keeps playing. The poor guy seems to be limping or bloodied every other game, as he took a stick to the face in tonight’s game. The points haven’t been there, but there’s certainly no denying his effort.

Hard to argue with the waved-off Islanders goal in overtime. One could try to claim that DeBrusk’s trip is what led the Islander to fly into Rask, but that’d be dubious at best. When an opposing player is flying into the top corner at the same time as the puck, it’s hard to count that as a goal.

Hockey is weird, but 2011 FRIENDSHIPS ARE FOREVER.

David Krejci and Johnny Boychuk were on opposing benches tonight, but for six seasons, they both sported the spoked-B.

Boychuk undoubtedly benefited from some of Krejci’s sublime passes during those years, and tonight, Boychuk returned the favor with an assist of his own: he returned Krejci’s teeth.

Late in the second period of tonight’s game against the New York Islanders, Krejci was leveled by a hit from Thomas Hickey. The hit appeared to daze Krejci, who was late to the start of the third period.

As it turns out, he didn’t need to visit the quiet room or get tested for a concussion...he just needed some dental work.

The hit by Hickey knocked at least one tooth (and it looked like maybe part of another) out of Krejci’s mouth. Luckily, an old pal was there to find it.

Know Your Enemy

Under new head coach Barry Trotz, the New York Islanders are feeling pretty good about themselves as of late. Seen as a bottom feeder at the beginning of the season, the Islanders have found a way to stick around past Thanksgiving. They are currently one point out of a playoff spot in the weakest Metropolitan Division we’ve seen in quite some time.

The Islanders have been led by Josh Bailey who has 21 points in 23 games. Surprisingly, Jordan Eberle has lagged behind for the blue and orange. His 11 points in 23 games is well below expected, but may be due to some bad luck. While he has netted 6 goals, his teammates haven’t been burying his setup passes.

Luckily for the Bruins, the Islanders are still awful defensively. While the Islanders have the seventh-best goaltending at 5v5 this season led by...*checks notes*...Thomas Greiss and Robin Lehner, it hasn’t been because of good defense. The Islanders give up a lot of good scoring chances.

Game Notes

The Bruins have fared well without Chara and Bergeron. A 3-2 loss in an even game in Toronto Monday night was an okay loss for the Bruins, but they need to bounce back against a much weaker opponent.

How will the ceremony effect the start of the game? Waiting an extra hour certainly isn’t fun and the last ceremony the Bruins sat through led to a 7-0 loss.

Mat Barzal makes Bruins-Islanders an interesting matchup. The Bruins passed up on Barzal three times in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. It was mentioned on the 31 Thoughts Podcast last season that Barzal told an organization (speculating the Bruins) that the team would “regret it” if they didn’t pick him. Currently Barzal has more points than the three Bruins draft picks have games played.

JFK took a step back in Toronto. Colby Cave will be looking to take advantage of that as he is expected to center Marchand and Pastrnak.
