A rare, fabulous second period full of goals by Boston was completely erased by lapses in the third period and a wild overtime.

For a back-to-back game, this is a good one to hope for: playing against a team admittedly in tank-ish mode that traded one of their players earlier in the day. How did it go?

First Period

The Bruins were forced to kill aNOTHer early penalty, to the hero of yesterday Patrice Bergeron - tripping against Mika Zibanejad. Guess he can’t be perfect everyday. On the kill, Chris Wagner had an awesome shorthanded chance after Kevin Shattenkirk tipped down a high right in front of him, springing Wagner on a break. Rangers goalie Alexandar Georgiev wrapped it up to keep things tied.

The B’s also endured a long possession by the Rangers, and after they were so tired they couldn’t buy a bounce to get the puck out, Matt Grzelcyk saved the day and made a great outlet pass to clear the zone.

Rangers D Marc Staal got sent off for a crosscheck, sending Boston on the power play; no dice. They had a handful of great chances following the end of the PP, but weren’t able to get a stick on one particular loose puck in the crease.

On a well-controlled rush, Zibanejad found himself wide open in the high slot and scored on a rocket of a shot with 2:15 to play in the first.

A looked-blindside-but-was-probably-incidental roughing penalty to Sean Kuraly and some followup stickwork from Jimmy Vesey would put both teams down a skater with about 50 seconds to play, as Vesey and Kuraly finished the period in the locker room.

Second Period

Penalty time ended, no fanfare. Kevan Miller took a crosschecking penalty, no fanfare. The B’s showed promise on stick plays - passing lanes and board battles - but seemed to be a half-stride behind every Ranger player. Matt Grzelcyk is still crushin’ it, and launched a quick shot towards the net that was favorably tipped by Danton Heinen.

Angst would continue with some pushing and shoving, most notably between Carlo and Mats Zuccarello with about 3 and a half minutes to go and resulting in matching penalties. The flow of the game stabilized for the rest of the frame.

Third Period

Boston came out fired up, but that faded somewhat quickly. Through a full bench rotation, the B’s connected one successful pass in the offensive zone. It was a few more shifts of futility before the B’s pushed back, causing a few turnovers before the Rangers could attack.

When Heinen picked off a pass and ended up at the top of the right circle it looked like Boston was completely in control, but on the next rush, the Rangers drove straight up the middle and had a 97%-breakaway, saved by Halak. Jimmy Vesey collected the rebound and gave the puck to Kevin Hayes, alone in the slot with no goalie in sight. 3-2, Bruins lead.

A better Boston hockey coach impression couldn’t be written. (Good thing for the Rangers, he’s not faking.)

Boston was stunned a bit to start last night’s game against the Islanders, first by having to kill a penalty nearly immediately and then by having SUCH good offensive zone possession that they forgot they were supposed to shoot the puck half the time. Penalty trouble in the second prevented serious momentum from building and another long one in the third threatened to derail the lucky success of the second.

Cassidy rolled his lines fairly evenly, including compensating for the more taxing PK minutes that fell on Bergeron and Marchand in the second period of last night’s game. Conserving them and saving them for more even-strength time in the third. Potentially glaring exception: a 2+ minute shift for Zdeno Chara AND Brandon Carlo with under ten minutes to play in the third (a double-minor PK was the main culprit). Fortunately, it worked - and Chara took another 90 second shift later in the period for good measure.

Boston HAS to dial in over the next two weeks. Goals from the second and third line are infrequent, and though the defense looked a bit more organized against the Islanders, the Bruins play six non-playoff teams and twice against the West-worst LA Kings over the next two weekends. It needs to start with a win on the road against the Rangers.

Bruins career sidebar: If Patrice Bergeron plays in every game for the rest of this season, and still gets a couple games off at the end of the season for -ahem- maintenance, he’ll move into fourth on the Bruins all-time games played list; Wayne Cashman still sits there at 1,027 games. Bergeron may pass him on the all-time Bruins points-scored list this year as well (for 6th). We’ll wait until next year to really hammer this one home, but Bergie is also on track to also pass his current team President Cam Neely in Bruins career goals and Rick Middleton (and maybe Cashman again) in assists between now and the end of ‘19-’20. Exciting times!!
