<p>Though there was a hard push by Boston in the early third to put the B’s up 4-2, LA made their late comeback.</p> <p id="NQ1FEa">The pregame celebration of all things <span>Patrice Bergeron</span> to comemorate 1000 games played in the NHL, all for the <a href="https://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/">Boston Bruins</a>. With his family at his side, Patrice received commendations from Bruins management, staff, and his teammates. From a cohort of players (Chara, Marchand, <span>Krejci</span>, Rask, and Backes) he received a family vacation to anywhere in the world; from the league, a Tiffany crystal commemorative trophy; and from the team, a silver stick, a poster-size photograph of him hoisting the Cup, and a painting of him at three different stages in his Bruins career.</p>
<p id="nupohd">His performance in the game would not leave any Bruins fan wanting.</p>
<p id="q8Fsq0"><strong>First Period</strong></p>
<p id="DYGmuB">An early penalty to <span>Jake DeBrusk</span>, nixed with about ten seconds left by a penalty to the <a href="https://www.jewelsfromthecrown.com/">Kings</a>. The power play looked effective, but no goal.</p>
<p id="TlmIh0">There were some early chances for the recently-minted top unit of Brad Marchand, <span>Bergeron</span>, and Danton <span>Heinen</span> - but the chances came for Marchand. Same goes for second line of Cehlarik, <span>Krejci</span>, Pastrnak - but the bulk of chances were for Pasta. Cehlarik made himself known to the Kings defense in the Bruins’ offensive zone around the perimeter, controlling pucks and winning board battles, but did not establish a presence around the slot for most of the game.</p>
<p id="9ekxHv">Little more to report - back and forth play continued without any goals scored.</p>
<p id="HB2rS1"><strong>Second Period</strong></p>
<p id="CNgXZN">After a quiet first, Boston score the game’s first goal, an easy one for Charlie McAvoy off an awesome sweeping pass from <span>Bergeron</span>.</p>
<div id="EvEDxG"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/mcavoy-finishes-nice-passing-play/t-300060880/c-65715403?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<p id="RTp8oh">The Kings got a goal from <span>Alex Iafallo</span>, assisted by <span>Alec Martinez</span>, while <span>David Krejci</span> sat in the penalty box for slashing.</p>
<div id="iAn8aT"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/iafallo-scores-ppg-on-one-timer/t-300060880/c-65716603?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<p id="ixOlnu">Penalties started pouring out of the Bruins, as Chara, Krejci, Carlo and Wagner each sat for a minor over the course of the second. <span>Anze Kopitar</span> was gift-wrapped a goal after Chara helped Rask get his stick back, leaving the right side uncovered.</p>
<div id="t71tFw"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/brown-kopitar-connect-for-goal/t-300060880/c-65717603?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<p id="tE7hHf">Boston would head to the locker room down one and without much by way of momentum to take to the next frame.</p>
<p id="2JMNVd"><strong>Third Period</strong></p>
<p id="QCcFch"><span>Danton Heinen</span> had all the time in the world to put this one home, after a great fake-to-snapshot from McAvoy set up the pad bounce.</p>
<div id="gnW2Ee"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/heinen-swats-home-a-rebound/t-300060880/c-65720203?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<p id="qzIbWS">Krejci followed quickly with a goal of his own.</p>
<div id="X9dxta"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/krejci-puts-bruins-ahead/t-300060880/c-65720703?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<p id="RCNBis">Not to be left out, and with Boston on the PK, Marchand broke free as Bergeron carried the puck all the way to the net, faked a toe-drag shot, and fed Marchand at the other side.</p>
<div id="qoxv2F"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/bergeron-sets-up-marchands-shg/t-300060880/c-65721103?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<p id="vzCuDB">All this good news is making us feel all warm and —</p>
<div id="ozWuoN"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/thompsons-tip-in-tally/t-300060880/c-65721603?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<p id="y1nbBX">Offensive zone turnovers often lead to goals, Kevan. Oh. At least there’s —</p>
<div id="YUweas"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/fantenbergs-game-tying-goal/t-300060880/c-65723003?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<h2 id="G1O3CT">OH FFS.</h2>
<p id="Clb7ng">With the game tied and under five minutes to play, Boston’s first line turned up the heat, putting several shots on net in one shift.</p>
<h1 id="y1soN6">OVERTIME</h1>
<p id="xb4wiu">I personally love Cassidy’s wise call to put two defensemen out with Bergeron for the opening faceoff, then to swap one for Marchand as soon as Boston gets possession and moves up the ice.</p>
<p id="UXPWLZ">A missed play in an LA corner gave <span>Adrian Kempe</span> a breakaway chance, which Tuukka stopped confidently with his blocker.</p>
<p id="fKiIMH">On the next rush, the Bruins moved up ice with two forwards planted at the ends of the offensive blue line. A skate up by Krug and a pass across ice faked to Pastrnak and through to Bergeron. A quick stickhandle to ensure the puck was flat, and he didn’t miss, ringing the left post and in. BRUINS WIN IN OVERTIME!!!</p>
<div id="K5WO72"><div style="max-width: 1280px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 57.4086%;"><iframe src="https://www.nhl.com/video/embed/bergeron-nets-ppg-in-overtime/t-277350912/c-65723603?autostart=false" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div>
<p id="4D9BMf">A needed victory, and a great showing for Bergeron on his commemorative day.</p>
<p id="3OacL9">Back in action tomorrow as the <a href="https://www.milehighhockey.com/">Colorado Avalanche</a> come to town for a 3PM Sunday tilt.</p>

<p>The last time LA visited Boston, they won the game on a faceoff shot where time magically stopped at the end of overtime.</p> <h1 id="H7XMrL"><strong>PREVIEW</strong></h1>
<h2 id="tC5nXM"><strong>Just the Facts</strong></h2>
<p id="vhyRzi"><strong>Who</strong>: The <a href="https://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/">Boston Bruins</a> (29-17-8) host the <a href="https://www.jewelsfromthecrown.com/">Los Angeles Kings</a> (23-27-4)</p>
<p id="HpAhZQ"><strong>What</strong>: The B’s are 2-0-1 in the first week of February, most recently the shootout loss against the <a href="https://www.blueshirtbanter.com/">Rangers</a>. Good so far. In the same timeframe, the Kings are 3-1-0, but it might just as easily have been 1-1-2, as they won in extra time twice. When two teams are this mercurial, it makes for either entertaining or frustrating hockey.</p>

<h3 id="pvXsJw"><strong>Game Notes</strong></h3>
<ul>
<li id="eoheNC">The Bruins’ loss this week was not a tightly-contested game that slipped away. The Bruins gave up two goals in the third to allow the Rangers to tie things, and though overtime was exciting, it was equally nail-biting frustrating. Boston needs more than a pick-me-up win against LA, they need to drill into their system.</li>
<li id="6o6kRt">With the Kings in tank mode, look for some players on their roster to be making their East Coast tryout. Not literally trying out, of course - just a preview that we might see some of these players in the East before the deadline has passed.</li>
<li id="gLrZbu">Now, I may be dating myself by using such an unfancy stat, but the Bruins are in the bottom half of the league in penalty kill effectiveness (18th, 79.5%; leader is Arizona at 84.8%). Renowned for their defensive structure and effectiveness for years (and under different coaching), one wonders where things went so sideways on special teams. <em>(HINT: It may have gone towards power play scoring effectiveness, whcih is tied for second in the league at 27.1%.)</em>
</li>
<li id="WYdeeH">Coach Cassidy had this bit of optimism to share about moving his forward lines around, which figure to stick going into Saturday’s game: “Well [the first line is] not as fast, Danton doesn’t skate like Pasta, so we know that; Danton is a good defensive player so we’re gonna assume they can play against anybody, that we’re not giving up any defense there, but you’re right - he’s not Pasta, we don’t know if they’ll score as much right away simply because... he’s not Pasta, right? But. we hope Krejci and Pasta generate more, we won’t lose Pasta’s offense, it’ll just come from a different line.”</li>
</ul>
